METLIKA
Key information
In the heart of green Bela Krajina and in the shelter of the old town of Metlika
The proverbial hospitality of the people of the Bela Krajina region and their excellent wine and delicious local specialities are always a good reason to visit this south-eastern part of Slovenia.
In 1963, a hotel was built in the old town of Metlika, the first hotel in Bela Krajina, a small, green wine-growing area along the Kolpa River. The hotel restaurant immediately became a favourite among locals and visitors, who loved to come for a glass of local wine, warm Bela Krajina pogača (a typical cake) and homemade vampi (tripe). After a recent renovation, the hotel retains its homeliness, as well as the recipes that have been passed down by word of mouth from chef to chef. They are now served with a modern twist and a glass or bottle of one of the outstanding wines produced by the local winemakers.
The restaurant team’s primary goal is to ensure a high quality of life of the people and of the environment around them, so they work closely with the local community, which they want their guests to feel as well. The whole team is like an extended family, creating and maintaining the proverbial Belokranjska hospitality, which invites guests into the warm embrace of the white birch trees.

Bela Krajina means taking a vow
They stand behind the name with all their heart.
The restaurant team stand by the Bela Krajina name with all their heart. Bela Krajina is not just a region, it is a unique territory of fertile hills, featuring Slovenia’s warmest river, forests and warm-hearted people. It means taking a vow to preserve traditions, which are reflected both on the plates and in the interior decoration of the restaurant.
The restaurant team are well aware that great taste is the result of the excellent ingredients that they obtain from the local farmers, and they pick the herbs themselves in the garden behind the hotel. They are famous for their Bela Krajina cake and secretly hint that probably no other establishment has baked as many Bela Krajina cakes as this one. This protected Slovenian dish is the first thing they bake every morning. Their Bela Krajina cake has also been rated as the best on several occasions.
Spoon dishes, which are very popular in Slovenia as well, are offered daily. Their speciality is tripe, but you can also enjoy pasulj (a bean stew), Bela Krajina šara (kohlrabi thick hot pot) or štruklji (rolled dumplings) in a soup. They also boast homemade meats, Bela Krajina šurlice (special pasta) and lamb, and trout from the Jelševniščica brook.
