Staragostilna Krulc

Not far from the current state border with Croatia, an inn has been operating since 1529 and has been owned by the Krulc family all this time. The management of the inn has been passed on from generation to generation until today, when it’s being managed by Janko Krulc. His ancestors frequently mentioned that Matija Gubec, the famous leader of the Croatian-Slovenian Peasant Revolt in the second half of the 16th century, enjoyed eating at the inn. Information about what he ate has unfortunately been forgotten, but you can try Gubec cold feast, which features a cold cut made from the meat of local Krškopolje pigs.

The inn keeps Krškopolje pigs and is proud of their homemade blood sausages and fried pork sausages which are served with buckwheat mush and sour cabbage. They also process cured meat products. What they don’t produce themselves, they obtain from the surrounding area, for example, Prosenik aged cheese from the Kukenberger Organic Farm, buckwheat flour from a mill in Kozjansko, sour cabbage from the Turk Farm, etc.

A home speciality is the ferryboat steak from a loin of the Krškopolje pig in porcini mushroom sauce with local cheese. It was named after the last ferryboat on the Sava River in Slovenia, which is used to transport hungry guests to the inn. The ferryboat has been in continuous use since 1885 and connects the former province of Štajerska on the left bank of the river with the former province of Kranjska on the right bank. The watercraft was originally larger and wooden. It’s propelled by the current of the river and steered by a boatman.
